Mastectomy Swimwear for the Fashion-Conscious

Mastectomy bras are a topic that has been covered a few times on The Breast Life. It’s a niche but (finally) growing area of the lingerie market. Even luxury brands are beginning to realize that not all women have two full breasts.

Mastectomy swimwear, however, still lags behind. It’s not that it’s hard to find; Google and you’ll see plenty. The problem is finding stylish mastectomy swimwear. It seems that the brands who are making it have yet to wake up to the fact that not everyone who gets breast cancer is forty-plus. Or that not all forty-plus women are okay with looking dowdy.

Mastectomy bikinis are especially hard to find, as are styles that aren’t high-necked. But after a lot of searching, I did manage to pull together some chic and fashion-forward options. There’s a little bit of everything here: florals, leopard print, and minimalism. I hope you find your perfect mastectomy swimwear for the summer ahead.

Pocketed Swimwear

Everything in this section has pockets to hold breast prostheses. The wrap bikini by Ana Ono, however, is designed to fit equally well even if you’re flat on one or both sides.

Non-Pocketed Swimwear

Do you have a flat or uneven chest to which you don’t want to draw attention? Wearing breast forms isn’t your only option. Only one of the ultra ruffly styles below is explicitly designed as mastectomy wear. But they will all help to camouflage asymmetry or flatness.

via Ana Ono

Available in sizes XS-XL
via Paper London

Asymmetric Cut-Out Ruffle Swimsuit by Derek Lam 10 Crosby

Mastectomy swimwear still has a long way to go. The pocketed styles above may be more fashion-forward than most. But notably, they still lack most of 2019’s significant swimwear trends. Even last year’s.

I’d also love to see more like Monokini 2.0, a brand designed to flaunt rather than disguise mastectomy-related flatness. Unfortunately, that seems to have been a concept project only. Their shop has been ‘coming soon’ now for quite some time.

Is any of the above the type of mastectomy swimwear you’ve been hoping to find? Or are there styles you love that aren't available as pocketed garments?
