There’s nothing like sorting through everything you own in preparation for moving to make you realize that you own lots of statement pieces, and not enough basics! I avoid shopping for plus-size basics in part because it’s hard. I’d argue that it’s harder to find high-quality plus-size basics, like t-shirts, then it is to find a fabulous special occasion dress.
When I put together this list of suggestions of plus-size basics, I looked at quality, fit, and longevity. So it includes many online companies with good return policies and many that are a tiny bit more expensive than your local big-box store. Going through all of my clothes recently made me realize that so many things I own have just fallen apart. In the long run, I wasted money. And I’d rather buy fewer t-shirts and have them be perfect than buy 10 and have them fall apart. It’s not only better for your wallet, but it’s also better for the planet.
Seine Mid Rise Skinny Jeans by Universal Standard
These are my favorite traditional jeans on the planet, and they will last forever. My last pair was pretty much my only pair of pants for two years, and they looked great the entire time. These jeans do have a bunch of stretch in them, so buy a size down from your regular size.
Boyfriend Denim in Plus Size by Lyseé
Having a high energy new dog has taught me the value of having a decent looking and comfortable pair of pants that you can pull on in a hurry. I love Lyseé leggings, and their stretch denim is no exception. It’s high quality, lasts forever, and looks fantastic on a plus-size figure.
Plus-Size T-Shirts and Tank Tops:
Foundation Tank by Universal Standard
Universal Standard recently released a genuinely groundbreaking line of foundation garments, from t-shirts to tube tops and slips. This tank is perfect by itself or as a layering piece and comes in sizes 00 to 40.
Super Soft Crop Tee by Ori
You can wear this slightly cropped t-shirt at a killer price with absolutely anything. It comes in useful but essential colors and has just enough crop to be flattering but not enough to show any skin. The curved design is smart and subtly sexy. Once slightly cooler weather hits, I’m going to order about five of them.
Foundation Long Sleeve V Neck Tee by Universal Standard
If you want a cute long-sleeved t-shirt, then try this one from the Foundation line. It would be great for layering under coats this autumn and winter.
Plus-Size Cashmere Sweaters:
If you’re going to invest in a sweater this winter, treat yourself and make it a cashmere one. This one is a great basic shape and comes in lots of neutral and bright color options to work with your closet.
Long-sleeve Everyday Cashmere Crewneck Sweater in Leopard by JCrew
J Crew’s affordable cashmere line goes up to a 3X and comes in a ton of different colors and prints. It allows you to add fashion-forward and classic options to your wardrobe depending on what you need that season.
Hi Waist Suede Leggings in Plus Size by Lyssé
Once temperatures turn colder, a great pair of suede leggings is a must-have. These are high quality, perfect for a wide variety of outfits, and will last forever.
Faux Leather Leggings
Faux leather leggings are another perfect outfit building plus-size basic. Unfortunately, the low-quality ones can feel awful on, and sometimes they make weird noises when you walk. These are easy to care for and of high quality.
Plus-Size Work Clothes:
9 to 5 Work Collection by Eloquii
Eloquii has two wonderful work collections, one basic and one trendy. If I had to work in an office, I wouldn’t go anywhere else. I love the mix and match choices of this collection and how it includes trendy accent pieces as well as basics.
Premier Work Collection by Eloquii
This collection has a more tailored focus with a focus on higher-end details like faux leather. The looks are on-trend but also totally office-appropriate and use stretch fabrics smartly for a great fit.
Plus-Size Coats and Jackets:
Gingham Check Quilted Jacket by Violeta by Mango
Mango always has adorable and well-made coats! I love this unusual gingham version that is perfect for the transitional fall weather.
Denim Jacket by Torrid
Torrid has fabulous stretch fabrics, which means that their denim jackets fit curves! This one is a great jacket that you can wear over everything from dresses to t-shirts.
Wool Overcoat by Violeta by Mango
I love the idea of a statement coat that still goes with everything! This wool overcoat is classic and fun, without being too crazy to wear to the office. It’s also warm and a completely reasonable price.
Basic Plus-Size Dresses:
Faux Leather and Ponte Mix Dress by Eloquii
This faux leather dress is perfect for the office or date night! I have a similar piece, and I wear it all the time once the temperatures get colder. It’s easy to accessorize a million different ways.
Dress with Skirt Cascade by Eloquii
This basic black dress works for a wide variety of occasions and can be dressed up or down easily. It’s one of those workhorse pieces that everyone should have in their closet, so you’re never stuck not having something to wear to a last-minute occasion.
Signature French Terry Dress by Ori
Everyone should own one awesome sweatshirt dress once cooler weather comes. This one is affordable, is available up to size 32, and uses high-quality fabric. The design is smart and easy to dress up or dress down.
What about you? Do you have a hard time finding plus-size basics? Where do you shop?
