With the popularity of shapewear, most slips you'll see at department stores look more like torture devices than lingerie. Who wants to feel like a stuffed sausage under that date-night dress? When slip shopping, look for fabrics that have excellent horizontal stretch or are cut on the bias, so it skims the body without riding up. Built in soft cups should have enough coverage that you can easily wear your favorite bra underneath (a few have such pretty necklines you'll want them to peek out under low-cut tops). Adjustable straps are crucial to providing individualized fit and customizing length. Lastly, unless you plan on a lace hem showing under swishing skirts, make sure to check the length of the slip against the length of your garment.
