Full Cup Bras: What Would Christina Hendricks Wear?

  |   By Elisabeth Dale

Most recent news reports questioning the authenticity of actress Christina Hendricks’ breasts ignored her full response.

Hendricks revealed:
"If there’s anything to be learned from me it’s that I’m learning to celebrate what I was born with, even though its sometimes been inconvenient. Having larger breasts has made it harder for me to shop throughout the years, but I’ve learnt to love it. [Italics mine.] It’s so bizarre that people are constantly asking if my breasts are real or fake," she adds. "They’re so obviously real that anyone who’s ever seen or touched a breast would know."

Breast augmentation surgeries have increased over the past decade, but there is no evidence that these implants are all of the super-sized variety. Rising plastic surgery statistics don’t account for the worldwide growth in larger bra sales.  Experts agree that the average breast size has swelled from a “C” to an “E” cup, for whatever reason.  It seems that more and more women face Ms. Hendricks’ challenge of dressing naturally bigger breasts.

Back in the 1970s, my bigger boobs stood out in my high school girls’ locker room.  It was tough to celebrate my curvy figure when I couldn’t even find anything to fit my above-average rack.  Fuller cup foundations were designed for the more mature, matronly figure. Longing for fit and support, I was also desperate for fashion and style.  My shopping choices were limited to white cotton, wired, quad-hooked constraints. What 16-year-old girl wants to wear her grandma’s bra?

Today’s lingerie industry is making the effort to meet full cup bra needs. I recently paid a visit to Jenette Bras in Los Angeles, where “the alphabet starts at D.” Proprietress Jenette Goldstein’s lovely retail shop was stocked with the latest and greatest fashionable styles made for D through K busts. Jenette’s top picks?  “The best brands for the full cup bra customer are Prima Donna and its younger, hipper sister, Prima Donna Twist.  Another great brand is Freya.” I asked Jenette about future trends in large cup foundations. “Look for 'cut and sewn' bras as opposed to the more familiar 'molded' bras. The tailored fabric usually incorporates a stretch lace and gives a more natural (or some might say retro) teardrop shape rather than the 'round mound' of the augmented breast.”

Since Jenette’s store is located in Hollywood, I had to ask how many of her customers also sport breast implants. “Apparently, augmented breasts don't need much support, because in the two years we've been open out of the 2,000 clients we've fitted, I'd say maybe eight were store bought.” Looks like the simplest way to embrace your body is to wear well-fitting and flattering lingerie. Thankfully, real women of all shapes and sizes now have the choice.
