It's not often I run across an intimate apparel brand that offers more than great fit and fashion. When I first laid eyes---and fingers---on Lusomé at a lingerie trade show, it was evident it was created to meet a particular need. It's made with an advanced moisture-wicking technology that accelerates evaporation and eliminates odor and bacteria.
I would have lived in Lusomé 24/7 some ten years ago when I went through the hormonal ups and downs of menopause. Nearly every woman I know suffers from night sweats or hot flashes during this transition. (And don't forget that it can take anywhere from a few years to a decade for symptoms to disappear.) But younger women and even men may find Lusomé nightwear useful and even necessary. That's because several medical conditions and cancer treatments cause the same uncomfortable night sweats typically associated with peri-menopause.
The good news is that Lusomé is not only functional and attractive but also comes in a variety of colors. You can mix and match almost all the short and long-sleeve tops with coordinating bottoms. Although less extensive, they also have a line for men. Any of their pieces would also make a great gift for someone going through cancer treatment.

How long has the brand been in business and what was the impetus for launch?

We founded Lusomé in the fall of 2012. I started the company after my 40-year-old sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a 25+ year as a fashion retail executive, I wanted to do something purposeful to help women who ar suffering in silence. Learning what my sister went through during chemo, radiation and years of hormone therapy cause horrible side effects one of which is night sweats.
What makes it different or unique in the lingerie or intimate apparel market?

Our technology is the most advanced moisture management textile system, inherent in fiber and construction. So no chemicals and made of a soft blend of Cotton/Micromodal/poly/spandex with a luxe and buttery soft hand feel. The perspiration is moved away from the skin ten times faster than other brands claiming moisture wicking. We have substantiated this through lab testing. My sister and some of her group of women suffering through cancer treatment did the initial wear testing when we were working on the fabric. We partnered with a top mill overseas that I had a long relationship with and the make fabrics for some of the most expensive activewear products in the world. It took two years and 70 rounds of fabric to perfect our performance and hand feel.

Who do you see as your ideal customer?

Along with being a technical luxury brand, our design aesthetic is elegant and modern and appeals to all ages. We are the opposite of “Granny Jammies”. We have sexy lace trim chemises, tank tops, shorts and of course the classic men's inspired PJ set. So all women craving elegant knit pajamas are the broad target audience. Women suffering from night sweats, which is 80% of the female population at some point are the main customer.

What’s been your greatest business challenge in establishing your brand (other than raising funds to launch)?
There is a skepticism that this technology actually works, so that has been a hurdle and then, of course, is price barrier. Our technology works and is proven but is not inexpensive.

Is there anything you find frustrating about the lingerie industry of which consumers have no clue?

It is noisy and there are so many brands, what makes them different in any given season? Much of it is just fashion, very few brands invest in true product development and pattern making to achieve a great fit. The world does not need another fashion brand, that is how we wanted to set ourselves apart.
Where do you want the brand to be in the next ten years?
We want to have presence globally and continue to advance our technology. We will extend to lingerie, bedding and ultimately activewear by 2028. Then I will retire.
