What is a Waspie Corset and How Do I Wear One?

Waspies don’t get written about much in the lingerie world. You may even be wondering what one is! A waspie is simply a name for a specific type of corset, an underbust one that’s particularly short. There’s no official definition, but generally speaking, a waspie corset is no more than 8” tall at the side seam. And as you will see in the images below, some measure much less than this.

Take a look at the image below, comparing two corsets by What Katie Did. On the left is a standard underbust corset with a 10.75” side seam, and on the right is a waspie corset measuring just 6” here.

Waspies also get referred to as "waist cinchers." Don’t confuse them, though, with the stretchy latex shapewear that also goes by that name! This is a true corset, with all of the steel boning and waist reduction that entails. So you need to shop for a waspie the same as you would any other type of corset. Buy one in a size 2-6 inches below your natural waist size to get the slimming effect.

Why wear a waspie?

Since there’s less material on a waspie, does that mean it’s less effective than a ‘full’ underbust corset? No, quite the opposite in fact. Because a waspie concentrates solely on your waistline, without narrowing your ribcage and hips at the same time, the effect can be more noticeable. Hence the name: it’s so-called because of the dramatic ‘wasp waist’ it creates!

A waspie could be a good corset choice for you if you have a short torso. I’m 5’3 myself and often find standard underbust corsets too tall for me. The bones poke into my bra at the top and stab my thighs when I sit down. Instead of paying out for customization, a waspie can often fit a short torso like a regular corset would a taller one.

It’s also easier to get a good fit in an off-the-rack waspie since it’s all about the waist measurement. You don’t have to worry so much about whether it will fit well in the ribs and hips too. The flip side, of course, is that they won’t do anything to smooth those areas. There’s not really any tummy control because the waspie doesn’t come down low enough.

Fit aside, you may prefer a waspie simply because it offers greater flexibility of movement. If you love the look of corsets but find the feeling too constrictive, a waspie may be the perfect compromise.

How to wear a waspie:

Some waspies are so short that they’re practically a wide belt. So why not wear them as one? You can pop a waspie on over clothing to define and highlight your waistline. Or join a top and skirt combo in the middle to look like a dress.

Just like with other types of corsets, it’s possible to find waspies that come with garter straps. Since they are short enough to not cover up your lingerie, they can look just like a garter belt. One that gives you an incredible, nipped-in waist that is!

Or, of course, you can just wear a waspie as you would a regular underbust corset. Pair it with any lingerie you like to create an instant hourglass figure. It’s a stylish, sexier alternative to the typical stretch shapewear to go under clothing.
