For far too long mastectomy lingerie has been focused on the utilitarian at the expense of fashion. It isn’t surprising, as designing for the particular needs of post-mastectomy women is no small task.
It’s not as simple as adding a pocketed lining to hold a breast form (prosthesis) and calling it a day. Post-surgical bodies have sensitivities, and there’s an enormous variety in the size and weight of breast forms.
Women’s bodies don’t just undergo a radical transformation from the surgery, of course. It’s a blow to their sense of self as well. Just when they need a boost of self-confidence, these women face the grim prospect of finding bras that make them feel like their pre-surgery selves. Happily, several brands have risen to meet the needs of these women, designing beautiful, feminine bras that empower breast cancer survivors to feel beautiful. One such brand that is changing the mastectomy bra landscape is Sophia Rose Intimates.
Founders Adelene and Carolyn Tan were dismayed at the lack of stylish mastectomy bra options when their mother underwent a bilateral mastectomy. So they took matters into their hands to create a new label that helps women reclaim their confidence after surgery. Their debut collection features a thoughtfully designed wireless bra with two matching panty options. Not only is the bra pretty and lacy, so are the panties! It’s so important because when your bra and panty matches, you feel put together and ready to take on the world.
Sophia Rose’s debut bra is a fuller cup style with a pretty scalloped lace neckline that is feminine and provides adequate coverage, necessary both for fit with a prosthetic and covering any potential scarring. Soft, two-tone lace is sewn in four parts and given structure and support with hidden thin foam cups. A moisture-wicking fabric lining keeps the wearer dry and comfortable and is pocketed to hold the prosthesis. There’s a wide elastic band under the bust that serves to secure the bra comfortably without underwires as well as hold the prosthesis in place.
During development, they fit the bra on women who have had a mastectomy and wear breast forms, as well as women who have undergone breast reconstruction. Sophia Rose is marketed to women who wear breast forms, but because the bra is wireless, breathable, and incredibly soft, it’s an excellent option for women who have chosen breast reconstruction. The initial launch is available in two colorways, violet and pale pink, with bras available in 34-38 bands with B-D cups, and panties available in sizes XS-XL.
